Under 18 End of Season Review
While the season didn’t finish how we would all of liked there were still plenty of highlights.
Firstly a big thank you to all the players and the parents for their commitment throughout the season and for the help you gave me and Adi. And I’m sure they would all like to thank Adi for his help not just this season but over the last few years, as I’m sure he is one of the few coaches out there that isn’t a parent of a player at the club and purely helps out of the goodness of his own heart and his love of football.
As for this season being in division one in the under 18s in which was a small league of only 7 teams meant that there was never going to be an easy game as all the quality players out their were condensed into these seven clubs. As a small village team when you look at the clubs we were up against with much bigger catchment areas and with better facilities to just be in this division was an achievement but when the league came to an early end we sat in 2nd place behind Corby Town who had only dropped two points in the league all season which was against us in a 1-1 draw away when they equalised in the last few minutes ( with a very dubious goal).
As history always dictates the local derby against Bourne is always a game everyone associated with Thurlby looks forward to and this season was no different. This year was probably the most anticipated yet between the two teams as 14 players from my squad and 10 players from the Bourne squad are all school mates at Bourne Grammar school !!!!
The home tie came early in the season and along with it a comfortable 3-0 victory for Thurlby, the score line not really reflecting the dominance of the home team. The reverse fixture was a similar game in which Thurlby dominated the first half but twice fell behind to sloppy goals and only went in with a 3-2 half time lead. The second half score reflected the difference in the two teams with a 5-0 difference meaning Thurlby completed the league double over their arch rivals with an 8-2 victory and earned the bragging rights .
I could quite easily mention every player in the squad for one reason or another and hope to get everyone together before they all head of in different directions this September whether it be University , an apprenticeship or who knows what. So I’m only going to give a particular mention to one player. This player has been with the team since day one when I believe he would have been around 6 years of age. As far as my memory serves me he has won either the players player or the supporters player or both every season. Not only this but he has had many opportunities and offers to move to so called bigger better teams but has never left in his words his beloved Thurlby Tigers. Although I don’t have the numbers I’m pretty sure that he will have made more appearances for the club than any other player so deserves a mention. But above all of these things he is a gentleman and one of the nicest people you could wish to meet and it’s been a pleasure having him in the team, so the one player I must mention is our outstanding goalkeeper Milan Spasojevic!!! Thank you Milan..
Finally as this is my farewell season I would like to thank all the other coaches and volunteers that have made my time as a coach so enjoyable (most of the time) but more importantly have made the club what it is today, “ the envy of most other clubs”. Keep up the good work and keep the club moving forward.
Thank you all
